Grit/sand doesn't accumulate above your narrow restriction?
Or is the 'tight' section at the top?

The spacers are on the skeg itself. The spacers are at the top when retracted, farther from the sand source.

How much offset is necessary, usually?

I suppose it depends on how much deadrise (V) there is in the bottom where the skeg is installed, but 1-inch is helpful.
