I'm going to build a strip kayak for my son's fiance.
To see what she would like, I gathered lots of pictures of strip planked boats, both for shape (model) and the look of the wood.
Naturally she picked something I am unsure of how to get the desired "look".
The issue is the shading of the wood at the back of the boat on the deck, shown here. There were no other pictures.
I considered selecting different shades of cedar and splicing them together to get the dark to light shading (from the stern to cockpit). But I believe it will not look very "shaded" and instead will have jumps in color.
Not what I want.
Any suggestions?
Is there any way to die the wood in a tapering fashion to get a continuous shading?
Looking for expert suggestions (well - any will be better than what I have). :)
I'm just starting on stripping the hull, so I have a little time to experiment.
Marc
