Tint the Finish *PIC*

In Response To: Strip: How to Make This Finish? *PIC* (Marc Upchurch)

The issue is the shading of the wood at the back of the boat on the deck, shown here. There were no other pictures.

My guess it was done with the finish, like sunburst toning on a guitar. I'd strip, fiberglass, and sand the deck like normal. I would then mask off the lighter section. I'd mix some dye into my finish (varnish or urethane) then spray the very end, tapering it off to nothing. Let it dry then remove the masking. Spray/brush on the rest of the coats like normal.

You could dye the wood by spraying it on but there's the normal bleeding issues with the lighter-colored wood.

The other nice thing with tinting the finish: if you don't like it you can just wipe it off.

No idea if that's how they did it but that's what I would do as a guitar builder (I stole the guitar picture off the web).
