I'm with Rod, that example is probably natural toning of the wood.

I'm also with Dan, if you want reproduce it on a more monotone material, try spraying. I would put some stain into a Preval sprayer if you want to go cheap or an airbrush if you have one. Mask off what you don't want toned and have at it.

The staining would be the last process before epoxy and fiberglass.
