...is to do it with paint. We've all seen fades like this on custom cars, motorcycles and myriad other objects and the technique for doing it is well documented. You'd want to protect it with several layers of clearcoat; otherwise. scratches would show really badly.
It seems to me that dying or staining the wood would be very difficult to control and it could be challenging to get a true fade. Perhaps if you use a really dilute dye or dye-stain (not a pigment stain) and sprayed it in multiple coats, you may be able to achieve a nice fade effect. I really think that spraying is the key here.
