I've helped with a few surfski repairs where the rudder 'hit something'. It's not a good situation. In one case just getting to shore was tricky, even with a very expert paddler, and the ski had quite a bit of water inside at the end.
i know our boats are a bit stronger than the average 'ski, but still....

I asked because all the small sailboats I've used over the years had vertical dagger boards. They don't usually retract when you hit something.

Like you I've also repaired a few race kayaks with underhung rudders (a carbon/nomex honeycomb Nelo K2 comes to mind). Similar results. Ouch.

The hull/rudder tube joint seems to be a weak point so I always beef up that area. For instance, the rudder on the black & red Spray I built last fall just hit a rock a few weeks ago. He hit so hard hard the 5/16" stainless rudder axle bent and pushed the carbon blade almost through the hull (glass - 3/16" cedar - glass). The rudder tube and upper housing were strong enough to absorb most of the impact.

That's why I like stern-mounted rudders that kick up. They make nice depth gauges! ;)
