I hope you know how envious I am at your selection of cedar.
No one here has even a couple of boards that would compare.

All of the big box lumber I look at is rough sawn, almost impossible to see grain patterns.
I look for minimal knots and buy as much as I find.
Sometimes I can spot a dark piece verses the mass of undefinable "lighter" boards.

I just cut up a 2x8 I've had for at least 3 years, to find it was the most even grained board I have ever had.

Well, I don't have to put up with show. :)
