I have built several GP's and the first one I made is still my best paddle. It was made from a solid piece of cedar and has maple tips and has blunt rather than rounded ends. No epoxy and it has held up to years of regular use.
I have done some with hardwood tips, some without, some with glass cloth on the ends, some with epoxy (no cloth), some without. Some laminated and some solid wood. Some rounded tips and some blunt ends.
I like the looks of a laminated paddle but the solid paddles have an almost imperceptible flex that is quite comfortable to use. My laminated paddles are stiffer.
Aside from the attractiveness of a laminated paddle my preferred paddle would be solid cedar, hardwood tips with blunt ends (although I don't see much difference in use with a rounded end). I would use epoxy on the ends but no cloth.
My next paddle - I want to make one with much thinner edges than my current ones, just to see...I will probably apply a narrow strip of cloth wrapped over the edges for protection.
One thing I would not do. I made one with a triangular shaped loom - it fit my hand very well in one position but did not fit when the paddle was rotated for some braces and strokes. Fat, oval looms for me.
