I have made quite a few to date. I have 5 blanks in waiting (I am now out of my reclaimed redwood, bummer). I tend to make mine a bit longer than most, a bit more flexible than most (saves on the joints), and flatter front to back on the loom (this way the blades stay out of the waves when it lies across the cockpit coaming).
I like rounded tips better than blunt (the blunt ones seem to flutter on me).
I also make mine GPs lighter and thinner-edged than most.
I have yet to break one but i do not use them to push off the bottom.
I have done hardwood tips.
I have done glass(3 oz.) on the tips. I haven't noticed a big difference (remember I don't use them to push off the bottom).
On some I make the tips like I do with canoe paddles; I cut back the tip, leaving a notch on each side of the blade. Then I lay the blade flat on some pastic and make a dam out of playdough. I mix up epoxy and wood flour and fill in between the blade and the dam. Then I shape it and cover with 3 oz glass.
