Actually - now I remember that my first GP was carved from a solid piece of flat sawn cedar. That is the way I had made canoe paddles prior to the GP/ I later read somewhere that a kayak paddle should be carved from edge grained lumber (is that the right term?). Since then all my paddles have been carved from edge grained lumber. Look better and less flex.
