Any fasteners you put on the keel will end up causing leaks, there are better ways to protect the keel from abrasion.

I watched a George Dyson video where he covered a canoe. He stapled the cloth to the keelson, then at the stems, he split the cloth and stapled it to the center of the stems and trimmed it close, one side at a time. He used an iron to heat seal the trimmed edges. Then, he stapled the cloth to the sheer clamps. All of these areas were later covered with trim and keel. I planned to do the same. The trim attached with epoxy and 1" x 18 ga. brads would prevent any leaks where the staples were used. I'm may also attach a narrow skeg to the rear of the keel if i have any tracking problems.
