I use a piece of float glass and 3M mylar-backed micro abrasives from Lee Valley. The trick is lubricating the abrasive with mineral oil. Then I frequently strop with the Veritas compound on a piece of baltic birch to remove the wire. I polish backs to mirror before putting on edges.
