In Response To: Tools: First strip build - first question (Paul Harker)

If you were starting out again, what tool(s) would you have appreciated even if you only were to build one kayak? Are there optional tools which really make a big difference in time or enjoyment of the build?

Just one kayak?? :-)
Seriously, though....
A couple of tools that I use a lot both on scratch builds and also on repairs and 'kayak renovation' jobs that I ask myself:"Why didn't I get that years ago and save myself a lot of work and problems??"
1)Carbide scrapers

2) Mirka Ceros ROS sander with vacuum, and Abranet sanding disks. I had used a Bosch sander with a ShopVac previously, but there's no comparison, IMO. A friend has the Festool system and reports that it works very well also. Both are seriously expensive, unfortunately.

Both these tools are useful for other projects besides kayaks, of course. It sounds like you are a 'tool guy' so you could conside adding them to your shop. :-)

To build 'just one' strip kayak you could do with even fewer tools than you have already, but it's more pleasant to have the right tools -especially if just starting on kayak projects. Life is unfair - it's the experts who can 'work around' problems and 'make do' with less than optimum tools, but the beginners who are often forced to do so.
