Better to get an old LOW angle yard sale plane and learn how to set it up than to spend $90 or what ever on new.

It probably depends on where you live, and whether you are going to yard sales anyway... (I'd have to spend 50 hours gong to yard sales with 'tools' in the listing to find a Stanley Low Angle plane, and when I found one, it would probably have a $50 price tag on it!) If you still find good buys at yard sales, be thankful!

I have a 'good' (??) collection of used planes, and it's fun to use them. But for me it's almost a separate hobby from actually making stuff.

They are expensive, but Veritas and Lie-Neilsen planes have good blades and adjustments 'right out of the box'. The blade on a older used plane may have been ground down on a grinding wheel, and some of the Stanley blades weren't that great even when they were new (and the new 'Record' plane I bought a few years back was rubbish).

Anyhow, shaping strips can be done with any small-ish plane that's properly sharpened and adjusted, IMO. WRC isn't a tough wood to plane.

But, if you are ordering from Lee Valley to buy the mini-plane for your RoboPlane thingy from Nick, you might as well put an apron plane in your shopping cart. ("Honey, I saved on the shipping cost by buying a couple more things!!" :-) )
