I would love to have a bench top disk sander, but don't have the space. The beauty of the belt sander is it has rounded ends that let you address concave curves.

The inability to sand concave surfaces is definitely a drawback of the disk sander. I use a drum in the drill press on those occasions; the belt sander is better.
Also, I found that the bigger surface area of the belt (vs disk) meant that the abrasive lasted longer.

When I was building guitars I used the belt sanders a lot - with an adjustable support under the 'nose' it's possible to thickness small parts and put a curve on them (ex: guitar bridges for steel-strings).

When we moved to the west coast, the huge difference in real estate prices meant that I traded my 16' x 65' basement woodshop for a single garage and an 8 x 16 inside 'all purpose (plumbing, mechanical,electrical, etc) shop. And I have more tools now than when I moved! So things are cramped; some tools stay in the corners, under wraps, most of the time. The upside is that the cars can stay outdoors since it seldom snows, so the garage is 100% workshop. And it's warm enough (but never too hot, even in summer) to work in the garage year round. I'm happy with the compromise. :-)
