Or you get a sawyer to cut the boards the way you want. I am fortunate that I can get flat sawn and exactly 3/4 in thick and straight so that pushing a 20 ft board along the fence is no problem. However, this may not be available in your area so I agree that grain orientation is a prime consideration. If the boards are all over in thickness, then planing them first is what I would do, then cut so that the grain is right for you, whether that be into smaller pieces and flipped, which will undoubtedly create more waste.
