After reading the comments, watching Rob Macks' video, re-watching Nick's 2nd video on building the Play, and investigating the grain in my newly acquired 5/4, I've decided to rip to 3/4, rotate, then cut strips.

Don't forget to plane one face of the board before you rip the 3/4 strips.

Now I've got to manage infeed/outfeed tables and find a helper.

The in/out feed tables are the more important, IMO. Unless you have a very skilled helper you may find (as I did) that the helper tends to pull the board to one side or the other , causing variation in strip thickness.
