I'm glad you did not back down.

The thing about receiving threatening letters from attorneys is, if they were sure that you were infringing, they would just immediately bring you to court, suing you for infringement. The letter means they don't think the case is worth that effort.

The goal of a letter is to intimidate. They hope you will do what they want, without incurring a lot of court fees. They will urge you to bring in your own lawyer to try to make fighting with them expensive.

The patent is the bludgeon they use to try to beat you into submission. They will try to give you a couple whacks, but if it doesn't work immediately, they don't really want to spend any money.

Design patents like Patent D548667 http://www.google.com.pg/patents/USD548667 are particularly weak and hard to enforce. They just cover the visual appearance of the object. Change the appearance, the patent does not apply. The holder to the recessed coaming patent has several design patents that he found fairly useless.
