Cut it out and throw away. Leave check plates down so you can fasten your backband to the stubs.
Often my foam seats are near paper thin under my lowest parts. If you break through you can slice a piece of foam in.
Most important: Be careful with a sawsall or any powered cutting tool when you cut the cheekplates... Sides of glass kayaks are thin.
