It would seem a relatively easy job to splice in a piece of bungee cord to the down haul line so it could flip up to prevent damage if it strikes an object. Would take a bit of experimenting to find the correct tension bungee and the length required. I've had other rudder boats set up this way. (not personally fond of rudder boats)
