I'm not really a fan of epoxy for gluing, especially splits in a piece of wood where it will expand and contract. Titebond III has better gap-filling properties, and it is flexible. I use it for anything that's going to flex- like skateboard decks or anything that will be wet/dry cycling. In my experience, even the best epoxy tends to peel, but I've never had laminations or pieces built with TBIII fail. There was a test of adhesives in Fine Woodworking a few years ago that said pretty much the same thing- I'm not re-inventing the wheel. Reading it made me feel more secure about using it how we use it.

There is a place for epoxy- for filling defects that are not necessarily structural I LOVE JB Weld's Woodweld. I can't find enough good things to say about it. I have even used it for some smaller gluing projects, and it has far outperformed all quick-set epoxies, even when filled with fancy thixotropic fillers.
