The confusion is about strength vs. abrasion resistance.

And, the 'engineering' needs to be 'better' if pushing the limits on strength and flexibility.
A couple of round Vancouver Is. record attempts showed up strength issues.
One was a Stellar kayak that performed well on the water but cracked (split open?) when it was pulled up the beach over a log with the gear inside. It was repaired and Russell Henry went on in it to set the current record (12 days and a bit).
Last year an attempt on the record was made using a surfski which had been modified by adding hatches to allow gear storage inside the hull. It developed a structural failure; I think (but can't recall) at the hull/deck joint.
Where a flexible area changes to a stiffer one is a spot for problems.

One of my earlier boats was a Necky Kevlar Arluk III. They did a good job on a super thin paper-like skin and I beat the h--- out of that boat and never really needed a repair other than cosmetic. If you pressed on the deck, it would flex, but because of creases and shapes it had strength.

Back in the 80s I borrowed a friend's Kevlar solo canoe and took it for a paddle on a local creek. At a shallow bend, I ran out of water and the canoe slid over a smooth bit of log buried in the mud. I could see the shape of the log distorting the hull as 'the bump' moved under me! The boat was fine, my nerves weren't! I hustled back home, shined up the boat and gave it back to the owner!
That was a thin canoe! But tough.
