My wife and I just attach our hydration packs to the bungees behind the cockpit. No fabrication needed. They detach easily for filling and cleaning with four clips already on the HPs. No leaky connections. I do agree with the comment about the need to remember to unclip the hose from the front of the PFD.

When we started paddling I wore a conventional CamelBak over my PFD. At that time my paddling experience was low and I was aware of how the weight of the water-filled bladder on my back affected my balance. My skills have improved, but the physics have not changed. Your underdeck approach would have the least affect on your balance. The wear-it-on-your-back approach would still have a greater affect. The on-deck method falls in between, but we haven't been aware of any problem it causes to us.
