In building my sander, the wood comes into contact with the front roller. This makes it more like a drum sander. I have seen others who have made something similar to mine but are using the whole pad of the belt sander. I would think there may be advantages and disadvantages to doing that, but not having made one that way, I'm not sure what they would be.
