If you build, the time to address this area is during the build. I always fill the weave on the floor of my boats and pay more attention to it in the foot area. My boats have ocean cockpits so I slide in. Theer's always going to be some sand. I know everyone is weight obsessive but there are realities to abrasion areas. If I see wear, I just reach in with a brush and coat the area with epoxy. (usually when I'm working on something else and have the epoxy). I really don't think it takes any more of a chore than that.
