I am going to try using mouse pads and contact cement
My advice would be to use the minimum of contact cement - a few 'spots' should keep the pads in place. It's not a high-stress area; you just want to keep the pads from floating away. You could probably tape the pads in place for a trial run.
If you don't need the insulation or 'comfy' aspects of foam, I agree with the assertion that epoxy or epoxy/glass - something that will wear away slowly but doesn't need to be removed - would be easier.
