It's time for an update.
The canoe frame is finished, ready for some sanding here and there then tung oil.
I did end up getting Western Red Cedar that was usable.
I had to buy three 1" x 8" x 16' to get around knots and bad grain.
Not very efficient but that's what I had to work with.
I turned that into 8 - 3/8" x 3/4" stringers, 2- 5/8"x3/4" stringers, 1- 1"x3/4" keel, and, 2 - 3/4"x3/4" inwales.
I used 20 - 3/8"x5/8" white oak ribs.
I used ash for the yoke and two thwarts, seat is also ash.
I used 2 - 2 1/2" x 20" WRC stems, WRC for the end caps.
The canoe is 15'8" end to end, 15'4" at the keel, 30" at the widest 1' behind center, 12" deep at the center, and 5" of rise at the bow, 3" of rise at the stern.
1" rocker front 3/4" rocker at the back.
I'm sure it's overbuilt, it feels like it's very strong, I think the stringers could size down to 1/4" x5/8" and the ribs could go 1/4" x5/8" without causing problems.
I also think I could use 4 less ribs in 16'.
I spaced six ribs at the seat area 5" on center, then went to 8" on center for several ribs toward the front and rear, and then to 10" on center towards the ends.
All up ready for tung oil and then skin it weighs 23.1 lbs.
I'm guesstimating I'll add 8-10 lbs for skin, spar varnish, a few screws, staples and thread.
