You could rip, plane, or sand a 1/8 to 3/16 dia dowel to half round (or round off square piece) and glue it to the deck or hatch to form a lip. Or maybe a smal bead of silicone allowed to dry in a similar shape (before replacing the hatch) would be good. Just suggestions. Let us know if you find that they work, though.
