"I would think that a sea kayak with an upswept bow and stern would... tend to naturally roll on its side."
I wonder about that. I've read articles explaining that traditional Greenland kayaks had upswept ends to make them easier to roll, and I've read that it shouldn't make a difference.
I find that if I have my paddle float tied to the deck, my kayak is far easier to roll than when it's stowed in the cockpit, so I'm inclined to think the upswept ends would help.
I'm only using a Pawlata roll, though, so I wonder if the resistance of the paddle float or upswept ends might slow down a hip-snap roll enough to be a hindrance.
It was explained to me that rolling a sea kayak was not neccessarily more difficult, just slower. That certainly seems to be true with the Pawlata or extended paddle roll, but I haven't mastered the hip-snap so I can't comment on that.
Bear in mind that a different paddle is used for a sea kayak and that can have a lot of effect.
Recently I carved a Greenland style paddle, though, and the difference was phenomenal. It's like rolling with a paddle float on the end of your paddle, except that it's a much faster roll than with a European paddle.
Below is a link to the plans I used for the paddle. I'm going to post the link as a new item, with a few comments.
