What about a router

I found using a block plane to make a scarf fairly simple, the only challenge was keeping relatively even edges and then trying to glue the pieces straight. I understand that, due to difficulties in lining up the 2 parts, CLC is now selling it's kits with "microedge scarf jts" (or something like that) that provide a small stepped edge that is easier to line up. I was considering using a router to form a single step ~3/4"-1" long (similar to a dado cut?), removing 1/2 the material from each side and then mating them together with epoxy.

- I thought this would be a simple joint to make and line up, plus have some of the joint overlap benefits of a scaft joint.

(Concerns - ie. would this promote delamination?)
