My point was that's not true. If water won't flow over the blade smoothly, you get turbulence which reduces efficiency when using a canted stroke. A smooth, streamlined shape also dramatically improves sculling and any stokes incorporating a sculling action. A paddle blade should be very "hydrodynamic".

That's true if you use a GP in pure drag mode, as you would a Euro paddle, since it promotes water shedding from the center of the blade out to both sides, just like dihedral blade does. With a canted stroke, you want water flow across the surface of the blade in one direction only, from lower edge to top edge. A smoothly contoured blade enhances that flow.
