I did mine the same way you are trying to do. I cut 3/4" long pieces from scrap WRC strips and hot glued them to the outside of the riser about 4" apart then just followed the tops of these spacers with my alternating walnut and maple lip strips. My strips were 1/4" wide and 1/8" thick applied in one session, strip over strip with lots of clamps. They would not bend around the leading edge of the cockpit so, after they were dry, I cut them off and added a solid walnut block and shaped to fit. I did not steam the strips but did use the heat gun a couple of times to twist the strips.
