: Put on a layer of 6 oz. glass on my first hull ever today.
: Would like to put on another layer of 6 oz. glass. ( I'm not one to
: baby my boats. )
: Can I put on the 2nd layer of glass tomorrow afternoon?
: You don't need a fill coat of epoxy between the layers of glass do
: you?
: Then in two days I can start building up a few more layers on the
: stems right?
: Then the fill coats of epoxy, right?
I hope some of the experts here chime in, and soon! I'll give you my .02, fwiw.
How old are you? Do you like lifting heavy weights over your head? Are you paddling in rock gardens, or expecting rough beach landings?
If so, the heavy-duty layup you're describing is spot on. (Oh yeah - going to war?)
You'd be surprised how heavy a 17' boat feels when you're hoisting it onto your suburban (or similar vehicle). Not so bad the first season - more the next year -
and by four years, it feels like a barge. First time builders tend to (hehe) overbuild, thinking more is stronger, when it's primarily just heavier. Kurt Maurer builds a really tough
boat - but he armwrestles every drop of epoxy he puts on the boat, and gets builds that are in the 30# range. My first build was 45#; second was 30.4# (I'm no Maurer or Hamm).
Guess which boat I take out most days?
You don't do fill coats until after you've added your second layer - but I'd strongly advise you to only do the football and the stems with the second layer. I only use 3.5 ounce, with a second layer as described - per Bill Hamms' recommendations. But I don't drag mine over gravel or paddle into the beach, so YMMV. But do yourself a favor - wait for more advice before you add that second layer.
