The seat is a hanging type - there are 4 bolts down through the deck right above the cut-off arms. They hold the seat in place (stop it from sliding) while the butt of the seat sits on bottom of the boat. I put some thin foam underneath to reduce chafing and to make it less slippery.

I initally did leave some of the back of the chair on but it was too steep and was digging into my back when I lay back. This boat, the Baffin by Boreal Design, is a true rolling machine with a REALLY low back coaming and deck. Having the seat lip just high enough to stop my butt from slipping back worked perfect. The back band allows for the free movement as well.
