I used Russian Birch from Home Despot but not before I did some testing. I boiled it a few times, froze it a few times then threw it in a cup of water on my windowsill. It was there for a about three months before my wife insisted I throw it out. After all this, there was absolutely no sign of delimination. Even the end grain I sanded prior to the test was still smooth. That was enough for me so I'll use it again in the future.
