An actual Newfoundlander here. The Newfoundland vernacular is very hard to capture in print - unless you really know it, of course. It's also been exaggerated in lots of case to make it more humourous. There's a young fella from here who's been making videos that really play up the accent. Some people find it too over the top and offensive. But most Newfoundlanders (be careful of when you use Newfie because many find it derogatory) don't mind people hamming up a bit. It's all part of our easy going nature!!

Check out this video - but we warned there is some crude language in it. Also, see how much you can actually understand.

As for Robert's boat story, I've never heard that one before but I do know that here in Newfoundland, wooden boats were "plimmed up" when they were put in the water - either after being built or after a winter pulled up on the slip. The boat would be put in the water and purposely filled up to the gunwales and left to soak like that. The idea was to actually swell the planks tight - which was important if they'd shrunk during the winter or the boat was newly constructed. If a boat was in the water and leaking it was said that "She needs to be plimmed up". Actually I joking said to a fellow paddler a few months ago that my SOF, which ships water around my spray skirt during roling, needed to be "plimmed up" He knew exactly what I was talking about!!

Cheers (from Newfoundland),

Sean

p.s. The sea pack ice is in around our shores now. Could make for some great paddling. Too bad it's also bringing the polar bears!!
