"Newfie" is one of those words that you either love or hate. It originates from the Americans who were stationed in St. John's during WWII. It was a initially derogatory term that was often preceeded by "goofy". Many people have have come to embrace the term while just as many - or more - take offence to it. It's funny but it seems more popular with Newfoundlanders who live away from the island rather than those who live here. It's also quite noticeable that there is often a split between those who are academic/artsy and those who are more working class when it comes to its usage. Go figure!!

Hoping to get out for a paddle this weekend. There's been a few bergs about so maybe we'll get lucky!!
