I'm with Roy on this one. I think a day hatch serves as place to put those things that you will need during the day's paddling, but not necessarily storage that is easily accessible while on the water. (I know I can't reach around, open my day hatch, extract something and replace the hatch without tipping over - my torso does not rotate that much) It's a convenient place to put small things that would either a) be rolling/sliding all over the place in the larger hatches spaces or b) be lost in the big space with all your camping gear and such. It's the equivalent of the small outside pockets on your large backpack where you put things that are needed more often. For things that I need immediately at hand - like water, snacks, gloves, balaclava etx, - I simply snap them under the bungee netting I have on my foredeck.

By the way, you can't beat bungee netting for holding stuff on your foredeck!! In the picture below, you will see my netting but in hindsight I could've made the mesh smaller which would hold even better but I've yet to lose anything!!
