I just retrofitted a KayakSport skeg into my Point Bennett (stitch and glue) I went with the flanged model. The keel of the Point Bennett in the aft is quite V-ed (see image below) so I had to cut a recess in the bottom of the hull to allow the flange to sit flush. At one point I went a bit too far but I simply rebuilt that section with layers of glass/epoxy and then re-cut the slot again. It was not the prettiest job when I was doing it, but the final product, after installation and cleanup, looks quite "factory", as they say.

The flange, I think, allows you to be a little less tight on your tolerances when fitting the skeg, i.e., the flange can help cover up any errors. I did not bother putting in the screws or bolts as I figure the thickened epoxy will hold the unit quite nicely. I figure the only way this thing is coming out is by ripping the entire bottom out of the boat!!

The image below was taken right after installation and before I did any sanding, so it may look a little "unfinished"
