Hi: I used the same method as Mark - rope loops to lift the hatch. I didn't file a drain for the hatches.
I was practicing wet exits and reentries the other day in my just finished Night Heron (to see if I could get out and in OK).
When I finished I found less than a cup of water in my storage areas. Maybe you could get a bone dry storage area if you put in drains.
