I am nearing completion of an Expedition single with pretty similar strip layout to your proposal.I have not used staples and have gone for bevelled strips rather than bead and cove. Timbers are Australian Red Cedar and King Billy Pine. Basic method was:
1. Deck - decide on the layout of the lighter strips. Mine were tapered and flowed from near bow to near stern along the cockpit each side. After installing a few strips (Red Cedar) at the deck sheer, I then installed the outer pieces (1/4" sq) to mark the shape I wanted. The inner bits of the lighter strips were then filled in on a fore-and aft layout.The 3 or 4 strips on the deck sheer line followed the sheer, while the rest of the strips (lighter and darker) were fore and aft. I used hot glue to tack the strips in place until fill in happened to secure the whole thing. It is important to get a good faif curve with the 1/4" sq strips and then ensure they are not moved from the fair line when butting other strips, particularly the darker colour.
2. Hull - fewer strips here...same process.
3. Bevels were done with a small Lie-Nielsen 102 block plane.
