I had a very similar problem and solved it with the careful use of a heat gun to soften the glue (Titebond 1) and then 'persuade' the strips inot their new position. In my case downward pressure was needed, which is what appears to be needed in your instance. Any small gaps can then be re-filled with glue. Good luck.
