I am re-varnishing my Night Heron after one season of paddling. I used Epifane High Gloss and liked the results. A friend of mine suggested that I re-finish it with a matte finish - scratches less visible, and it's better UV protection. So, working on the hull first, I wet sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper; applied a coat of Epifane High Gloss, waited 24 hours and applied a coat of Epifane Matte; waited just under 24 hours to apply a second coat of matte finish. I followed Rob Mack's guidelines: foam brush, 16" sq. areas across the grain, down the grain, and across the grain. This method worked well for me in the past. I followed Epithane's recommendations about application times between coats. Now, my problem is: on the last application of the matte finish I had dead spots, where the varnish did not apply to the hull. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem, I wanted to get it sorted out before I started on the deck. Thanks, Jack
