Hey Kevin: the image above is of my Point Bennett in which I installed the KajakSport skeg (flanged). It was added to my post by mistake and I can't seem to delete it. Still, it applies to my Black Pearl project because I put a KajakSport skeg in the Pearl as well. What a co-inkydink!!

I did not shape the flange to hull but rather, the opposite. I cut a recess into the hull to fit the shape of the flange. It wasn't too deep a cut. Once the skeg was in place, I faired the hull with epoxy and sanded smooth. You cannot see the flange at all in the Pearl.

Below is a link to my blog entry on how I did it on the Point Bennett last year. It should answer most of your questions. I know it looks like a real hack job during the process but it turned out great!! The Pearl installation was a lot less "intrusive"
