I've had fairly good results by applying 3 or 4 thin coats then monitoring for runs and drips during the drying period - smoothing them with the applicator or a stiff brush.
The rugged coating this "goop" provides is worth the trouble to me. The end result is not a showroom-perfect mirror finish but to me it has the appealing character of a handmade object.
