Marc, homebuilt aircraft are welded 4130 steel tubes structurally divided into triangles for added strength I would consider this frame much supereior in strength as compared to a wooden kayak frame. It is not this steel frame that is so susceptible to crushing, it is the wooden wings.
Ceconite is glued to the aircraft around the edges of the structure only then heat shrunk with a temperature controlled clothes iron in stages by raising the set iron temperature at each stage. Each ironing tightens the cloth more. The last ironing is at 350 degrees. At this point, after the aircraft is painted, anyone not knowing any better would think the aircraft is covered in metal as the fabric is extremely rigid.
The reason for the closely monitored iron temperature is that the fabric will continue to shrink if higher temperatures are used. This is where structural failure would / will occur.
I have never covered a kayak with cloth and probably will never build a SOF as I like the wood medium much better.
