Probably a bit cheap to try a commercial kayak too, with no intent to purchase.

There's probably a good chance that someone nearish to you will have built a night heron or petrel, who might be happy for you to trial it. Maybe that would help. I imagine that trying the real thing would be a lot more beneficial than trying a different kayak which may or may not be similar, there are so many variables.
