Hi Shawn;

I was thinking of an alternative to laying up a composite core - Use thinner strip material as was suggested, but laminate one side (the inside) with light cloth before assembly. Perhaps unidirectional graphite. That would preserve and perhaps enhance the stiffness, but turn out even lighter. Since graphite doesn't abrade nearly as severely as our standard glass cloth, it would to be great to be able to layup one side of say a 5" wide x 1/8" thick board and rip the required strips from it. I think your larger design uses about 4" total strip-width .

BTW, I weighed my glassed & epoxied paddle tonight and it comes in at 2.6 lbs. That is _reasonably_ light, but the mass seems to concentrate in the paddle blades. I'm not an experienced paddler, but I have a feeling my muscles will report how much lighter I should have built it . . . ;-)
