A few years ago, I heard a mast builder consider putting a thread of carbon fiber in the V before gluing. This was supposed to increase the stiffness. I don't know if he ever tried the idea.

: Hi Shawn;
: I was thinking of an alternative to laying up a composite core - Use thinner
: strip material as was suggested, but laminate one side (the inside) with
: light cloth before assembly. Perhaps unidirectional graphite. That would
: preserve and perhaps enhance the stiffness, but turn out even lighter.
: Since graphite doesn't abrade nearly as severely as our standard glass
: cloth, it would to be great to be able to layup one side of say a 5"
: wide x 1/8" thick board and rip the required strips from it. I think
: your larger design uses about 4" total strip-width .
: BTW, I weighed my glassed & epoxied paddle tonight and it comes in at 2.6
: lbs. That is _reasonably_ light, but the mass seems to concentrate in the
: paddle blades. I'm not an experienced paddler, but I have a feeling my
: muscles will report how much lighter I should have built it . . . ;-)
: Thinking out loud, Spidey
